The children had a visit from Mary and Kelly from The ‘Holbrook mummers’ on the 30th January 2024. They had kindly raised £202 for pre-school through performing the Holbrook Mummers plays in the village pubs over Christmas 2022 and 2023.

Mary and Kelly talked to the children about the rag coats with Damson tatters that they wear and that they are significant because damsons were grown in the village of Holbrook to dye wool for knitting. Apparently, as a result of the Industrial Revolution, Holbrook became a village of framework knitters and by the mid-19th century, nearly a third of its 1,000 population was involved in making cotton stockings, silk gloves, underwear and ties.

Mary and Kellie showed the children their hats and that they have lights that they can put on when they dance in the dark. They also showed the children the bells that they wear on their legs which jingle when they dance.

Mary and Kellie then did a dance demonstration for the children, accompanied by music created specifically for them by a local musician.

Then it was time for the children to have a turn at dancing, which was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.

Thank-you Mary and Kellie for sharing this wonderful experience with the children.
